The 2019-2020 ELAR Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills require students to listen, discuss, think about, and write critically across increasingly complex texts. Accessing complex texts requires intentional instruction. This introduction to Close Reading provides participants the opportunity to come face to face with this instructional routine that helps guide students in their understanding of complex texts. Close Reading leads students in scaffolded multiple readings of a complex text in order to think about, discuss, and write about what the text says (literal meaning), how the text works, (author’s craft), and what the text means (inferential-level).
